Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to contest certain decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
